Abstract
The authors reviewed the hematologic findings in the 12 cancer patients with bone
marrow metastasis.
The results were as follows :
1. Anemia was present in 8 patients (66.7%)
2. Seven patients (58.3%) revealed thrombocytopenia, 3 of them showed severe tar-
ombocytopenia below 20,000/§§.
3. Polymorphonuclear leukocytosis was noticed in 5 patients (41.6%), leukopenia in 1
patient, Iymphopenia in 5 patients and eosinophilia in 4 patients.
4. Peripheral blood smear showed anisocytosis in 4 patients, poikilocytosis in 9
patients, shizocyte in 5 patients, burr cell in 4 patients and hypochromia in 3 patients.
5. Leukoerythroblastosis was observed in 3 patients and 1 patient showed immature
eukocytes alone.
6. Bone marrow finding of cellularity, number and maturity was variable and not
correlated with peripheral blood finding.
7. Three patients showed typical pictures of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia.
In conclusion the anemia, thrombocytopenia and leukocytosis were common findings in
the cancer patients with bone marrow metastasis. The characteristic finding with leu-
koerythroblastosis and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia suggestive of bone marrow
metastasis were present in only few patients. The bone marrow finding was
unremarkable.
